New to Blu - Week of 10/10/2016 (2024)

Each week here at Bloody Disgusting we like to highlight some of the new Blu-ray releases hitting shelves across the world. Please note that this isn’t every release for the week, just a few of the ones that jumped out at us.

Lots and lots of good stuff out this week, especially if you’re into TV shows. Out this week from Paramount is the original run of The Twilight Zone now available as individual seasons. Mill Creek is providing fans with complete collections of both Miami Vice and Knight Rider, while Lionsgate is doing the same for Hannibal. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! We’ve got amazing releases of The Thing and Carrie from Scream Factory, some great titles from Kino Lorber including Witchcraft and a whole lot more. This is a good week, my friends.

Synopsis:
Violent Cop (“Sono otoko kyobo ni tsuki”) is the first film directed by Takeshi “Beat” Kitano, the Japanese star who began as a stand-up comedian on television. It’s a Dirty Harry-type tale of a cop whose overly muscular methods are disapproved of by his superiors. When his partner is killed by the local Mr Big, Azuma (Kitano) goes into action, along with a new sidekick he initiates into the ways of the world. Dismissed from the force, Azuma carries on his one-man campaign, despite his sister’s being forcibly drugged and raped by the gang. The violence is graphic, but what’s most engaging about the film is Kitano’s acting. He’s an unlikely hero with his bow-legged walk and the face of a punch-drunk boxer, but his low-key style, a counterpart to the explosive violence, is always cool and it’s easy to see why he’s such a cult figure.
