Can there be 53 weeks in a year? ›

Most years have 52 weeks, but if the year starts on a Thursday or is a leap year that starts on a Wednesday, that particular year will have 53 numbered weeks. These week numbers are commonly used in some European and Asian countries; but not so much in the United States.

Last year this was a Wednesday but this year, due to the extra day in February there are two days where a week 53 can occur. As lots of employers pay on a Thursday or Friday, there will be more week 53's processed this year than normally.

The 53-week year

Dividing the retail calendar into 52 weeks of seven days each, or 364 days, leaves an extra day each year to be accounted for. As a result, every five to six years a week is added to the fiscal calendar. This anomaly has most recently occurred in FY12 and FY17 and will occur in FY23.

At that point, the first Saturday in the following month (September 3 or earlier in this case) becomes the date closest to the end of August and it resets to that date and the fiscal year has 53 weeks instead of 52. On the above chart, fiscal years 2028 and 2033 have 53 weeks.
