MOST ENERGY DRINKS ARE NOT IBS FRIENDLY

The low FODMAP diet can be really restrictive, limiting lots of every day ingredients commonly found in drinks. Most energy drinks contain caffeine, which is a gut irritant and therefore not IBS friendly. Even caffeine free drinks containing vitamins contain high FODMAP ingredients, such as fruit juice concentrate, which can trigger IBS symptoms. Even low FODMAP sports drinks can be challenging to find, without having to analyse product labels and even then, no other vitamin drink is low FODMAP certified.

Finding a ‘grab and go’, pick me up energy drink which is FODMAP Friendly is very challenging. That’s why we created our hydrating, all natural, Energy Infusion Waters, to launch an IBS friendly, natural energy drink and we’re the first in the world to achieve this! OUR CHALLENGES OF CREATING A LOW FODMAP ENERGY DRINK RANGE

It’s taken us around 6 months to develop our Energy Infusion Water range, which has involved some complex product development, innovation challenges as well as thorough testing to ensure our low FODMAP drinks range is low FODMAP compliant. We sought help and support from the Scottish Centre for Food Development and Innovation at Queen Margaret University, who have been a fantastic support to Fodilicious.

We began with refining our concept. We definitely wanted to make sure our drinks contained an energising vitamin blend, so we could class them as energy drinks, as this was the first gap in the market we found – there were no low FODMAP natural energy drinks available. We also wanted to ensure we kept the drinks caffeine free, sugar free and 100% natural, in order to compete successfully in the ‘health drink’ space. However, the low FODMAP diet restricts so many ingredients (fruit juice, sugar alcohols, even types of sweeteners) and we had a huge challenge set out ahead of us!

We were determined to launch 3 flavours, to ensure we had a flavour for everyone. This made the task even more challenging, as we were not just developing 1 drink, we were developing 3!

After thorough trials and testing, our final prototypes were a vitamin filled, lightly infused, gently sparkling flavoured water range. We then got down to looking at the marketing of our product range, thought of a unique name, and boom! We have launched our Energy Infusion Waters – the first low FODMAP, gut friendly, plant-based natural energy drink range in the world.
