Less-Mess Bannock

This bannock recipe can be made while camping without using a single dish! Just prepare the mix ahead of time and you are ready to go. Great for a snack or breakfast.

Mix together the following ingredients at home in a zipper-lock bag and seal:

1 cup white flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

To make dough at the campsite, add:

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

…slowly into the bag filled with your pre-made bannock mix. Seal the bag and knead the bag until dry ingredients are wet.

Separate dough into 4 portions. Wrap dough portion around a camp fork, flattened thinly so it cooks faster. Cook slowly above hot coals until cooked through (10-15 minutes)

Serve with butter, your favourite jam or spread.

Makes 4 servings.

ENJOY!

Variations: add your favourite seasonings to the mix (e.g., herb and garlic, cinnamon and raisin)

*You can also cook portions in a frying pan over your camp stove.

Looking for an easier recipe? Bisquick is a ready-made baking mix that works great for bannock. For 1 cup of Bisquick, just add 6-8 tablespoons of water and 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil/margarine to make dough.
