2023 U20 World Cup - Argentina

England have qualified!
Seems as good a time as any to make the thread, so far France and Italy in too.
But I also want to talk about something interesting in Asia, they've had a restructure and gone from an U19 to an U20 championship. Also, they removed the West / East regional qualifying split and now have qualifying groups where you can draw anyone unless they're in the same pot as you. Those groups have already been drawn:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_AF ... lification
The CONCACAF U20 tournament is in progress, so we'll soon find out who's representing them too. Oceania U19 is in August, the rest in 2023.
I am thinking I might use this thread to make any posts about these other tournaments. But I'll continue using the CONCACAF Nations League thread to talk about the CONCACAF U20.

I just noticed that Indonesia is the host - it's borderline ridiculous, their NT is too weak at all levels to play in World Cups.
The CONCACAF U20 tounrament has a super weird format. Why are 4 weak teams directly in the Ro16 through a different path?

They'll probably defeat Oceania 2 easily enough if they draw them. That's the main problem with these World Cups. Indonesia sent their team to the Toulon Tournament and they actually did a lot better than you'd expect. Lost 0-1 to Venezuela, beat Ghana 1-0, lost 0-2 to Mexico and drew 1-1 with Algeria, losing on penalties. And they'll almost certainly have a massive crowd behind them.

Netherlands and Norway did their utmost best to get Ukraine qualified for this, but Serbia (who else) didn’t want to cooperate…..

They were not directly in the R16, they did win their group.
It is a good system to have more competitive games, similar to the Euro playoffs for NL teams from league C (and previously D too)

Israel have qualified.
Indonesia does not recognise Israel, so that'll be interesting, especially if they draw Indonesia or another country that does not recognise Israel.

FIFA will probably put draw restrictions (without announcing it) to avoid the fiasco of a country withdrawing and Israel winning without playing.

That would be really unfair towards Israel not to meet Arab teams from Asia which are traditionally worse than others.

Ah, so that's why Israel isn't in the Asia confederation...

I read an article quoting Indonesian officials saying that they will welcome Israel under 20 NT for the competition, as per the undertakings they gave FIFA after winning the hosting rights.

So did I. Though in the article it was a prediction rather than a fact, based on Indonesia previously hosting other sporting events, and that Israel would be here by FIFA's invitation rather than Indonesia's.

UAE and Bahrain (will not have a problem to play with Israel. Iran will definitely won't play against Israel. Saudi Arabia is a big mistery.
It would be funny if Palestine will qualify. They should not have a problem to play against Israel, as thousands and thousands of men are crossing the borders everyday to work in Israel.
